Competition Labels

1. Overview

Competition Labels generates a printable sheet of labels covering the competitions of the show. Unlike the participant Label Generator, this tool requires no selection step: the competition set is determined server-side and the operator only configures the label sheet geometry.

The result is a PDF that opens in a new window with the print dialog triggered automatically.

Typical uses: competition markers for the office wall, result envelopes, judge folders, ring binders, and box labels for course plans.

2. How it differs from the participant Label Generator

Competition Labels Label Generator
One label per Competition Rider/horse entry
Selection UI None Multi-list picker
Logo upload No Yes
Free text No Yes
Sorting options No Yes
Presets Yes No
Backend Competiions_label/generate_label.php generate_label.php

If you need per-entry labels, use the Label Generator instead.

3. Access and authentication

Launched from Equipe with a JWT token:

competition_labels.php?token=<JWT>
  • Signing algorithm: HS256
  • Leeway: 60 seconds
  • Payload fields used: meeting_url, style_url, target, and api_key

The page renders only when payload.target is modal or browser.

Competitions are fetched from <meeting_url>/competitions.json when the page loads. The response is used by the backend generator; the front end presents no competition picker.

4. Quick presets

Four one-click configurations covering common European label stock:

Preset Grid Label size Gutters Margins (L/T/R/B)
Avery L7160 3 × 7 (21) 63.5 × 38.1 mm 2.5 / 0 7 / 15 / 7 / 15
Avery L7163 2 × 7 (14) 99.1 × 38.1 mm 2.5 / 0 7 / 15 / 7 / 15
Avery L7162 2 × 8 (16) 99.1 × 33.9 mm 2.5 / 0 7 / 13 / 7 / 13
A4 10×3 3 × 10 (30) 63.5 × 25.4 mm 2.5 / 2.5 7 / 10 / 7 / 10

Applying a preset fills all ten fields at once and flashes them green for half a second as confirmation. Values remain fully editable afterwards — a preset is a starting point, not a lock.

5. Manual configuration

All measurements are in millimetres.

Layout

Field Meaning
Number of Rows Labels down the page
Number of Columns Labels across the page
Label Width Width of a single label
Label Height Height of a single label

Spacing

Field Meaning
Column Gutter Horizontal gap between columns
Row Gutter Vertical gap between rows
Margin Left / Top / Right / Bottom Page margins

Fitting check

The configuration must fit an A4 page (210 × 297 mm):

(columns × width) + ((columns − 1) × column gutter) + left + right ≤ 210
(rows × height) + ((rows − 1) × row gutter) + top + bottom ≤ 297

Verify against the Avery L7160 preset as a sanity check: (3 × 63.5) + (2 × 2.5) + 7 + 7 = 209.5 mm — just inside the page width.

Defaults

Top margin defaults to 10 mm; all other margins and both gutters default to 0.

6. Interface behaviour

  • The Generate and Print Labels button disables itself and shows a spinner during the request
  • The button is re-enabled in the complete handler, so it recovers from both success and failure
  • On error, an alert is shown and the console carries the detail
  • A static preview panel indicates that output depends on the current configuration; it is illustrative, not a live render

7. Troubleshooting

"Please allow pop-ups to print the PDF" The browser blocked the new window. Allow pop-ups for the site and generate again.

Labels drift progressively down or across the sheet Cumulative rounding, or printer scaling. Set print scaling to 100 % — never "fit to page" or "shrink to fit" — and re-measure the physical sheet.

Content overflows onto an extra page The geometry exceeds A4. Recheck against the formulas in section 5.

Nothing happens on Generate Open the browser console. A network failure or a PHP fatal in the backend produces no on-screen message beyond the alert.

Preset applied but the print is still misaligned Label stock from different manufacturers using the same nominal reference can vary by a millimetre or two. Adjust the margins by hand from the preset baseline.

Empty PDF The competition list returned no records. Check the API key and that the meeting has competitions defined.

8. Operational notes

  • Always run a plain-paper test print and hold it against the label sheet before printing on stock.
  • Configuration is not persisted — reloading resets to the defaults. Note the values you settle on for recurring shows.
  • Presets cover common Avery references; other manufacturers publish equivalent dimensions in their datasheets and can be entered manually.
  • The PDF is generated fresh on each run, so schedule changes are reflected immediately.
